Monthly makes a book of your month from the photos on your iPhone. This page says what leaves your phone, why, who handles it, and how to remove it.
What stays on your iPhone
Monthly reads your photo library on the phone to choose each week’s best. Your photos, the index the app builds from them (quality scores, faces, blur, colour), where they were taken, and your keeps and swaps never leave your iPhone, unless you add your keeps to another parent’s book (below). To caption a photo with a place name, the app asks Apple’s location service on the phone; we never receive the location.
What we collect, and why
- The photos in a book you order. When a book you subscribed for is due, its two print files (the pages and the cover) are uploaded to our storage and sent to our printer, Lulu, to print and ship it. They are deleted 30 days after the book ships. Photos in books you don’t order are never uploaded.
- Photos you add to your partner’s book. If you join another parent’s book with their code, each photo you keep is uploaded to our storage so their iPhone can lay it out in the month’s book. Only that parent can see it. It is deleted a few days after that month’s book prints, when you take it out, or as soon as either of you stops sharing.
- Your name and email address, from Sign in with Apple, to keep your account. If you choose Hide My Email, we only receive Apple’s relay address.
- Your shipping address and phone number, and a gift address if you add one, to print and deliver your books. The printer and the carrier receive them for that delivery.
- Payment. Card and Apple Pay details go into Stripe’s payment sheet and are handled by Stripe; we never see your card number. We keep your subscription and order history (your purchase history) to know which books are paid for, and RevenueCat keeps your subscription status so the app knows you can print.
- How you use the app: events such as opening a deck, keeping or swapping a photo, viewing a proof or subscribing, and crash reports, sent to PostHog so we can improve the app. They never include photos, photo identifiers or locations. They are tied to an identifier the app creates, and to your account once you sign in.
Who handles it
Only the companies that run Monthly for us: Lulu (printing and shipping), Cloudflare (file storage), Stripe (payments), RevenueCat (subscription status), PostHog (analytics and crash reports), Vercel and Neon (our servers and database), and Apple (Sign in with Apple). They may use your data only to provide their service to us. We never sell it. Some of them process data outside your country, including in the United States and the European Union.
Tracking and ads
We do not track you. Monthly has no ads, and nothing is used for advertising or given to data brokers.
This website
This site sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising scripts. Like any website, our host (Vercel) receives your IP address and browser details to deliver the pages and keep them safe, and keeps them in its logs for a short time. If you email us, we use your message and address only to answer you.
Keeping and deleting it
Print files are deleted 30 days after a book ships, and photos shared with a partner a few days after their month’s book prints. Your account, addresses and order history are kept until you delete your account: Settings → Delete account cancels your subscription, deletes your account, books and addresses from our servers, and empties Monthly on your iPhone. Your photo library is not touched. We keep the record of payments that tax law requires. To have your usage events removed as well, write to us.
Children
Monthly is for parents and is not directed at children under 13; we do not knowingly collect their data. Photos of your children stay on your phone unless you order a book with them or add them to your partner’s book.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete the data we hold about you, wherever you live. Use Delete account in the app, or write to us, and we will answer within 30 days. If you think we have not handled your data well, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes
If this policy changes we will post it here with a new date, and tell you in the app when the change matters. The terms of use cover everything else about using Monthly.
